Singapore Zoo - A Place To Will Enthrall You!

You might have been to several zoos and wildlife conservation parks in your city but the zoo in Singapore is indeed an out of the world experience. The Singapore Zoo has more animals and wildlife than any other Zoo and is extremely well maintained. Inaugurated in the year 1973 on 23rd June with an investment of 9 million Singapore dollars the Zoo is said to have the best facilities and hygiene. It is also called the Mandai Zoo and is another must watch attraction with the Singapore bird sanctuary.

The zoo is under the supervision of Singapore Wildlife Reserves which runs both the Singapore Bird Sanctuary and the Night Safari. The concept of the zoo is very much like an open zoo as opposed to the zoos that are normally found in your city. Here the visitors can see the animals in open enclosures and feel them nearby. With over 28 hectors of land under its occupancy the zoo is flocked every year by approximately 1.4 million visitors. The place has over 315 different animal species and an extensive range of wildlife.

For children, this place should not be missed by any chance because not only will your kids have a wonderfully fun filled day but they will also learn a great deal in the process. The one good way to enjoy this place is to reach in morning and spend the entire day there with the kids. The children will not only get entertained but also find new things about the nature and study the animals in peace. Even you would have the time of your life in this greater than life experience. A real animal lover would find his paradise in this place.

The animals there are kept in a way that they would be kept had they been in open. They are allowed to hunt for their pray and roam around freely. Hence we tourists find the animals as primitive as they could get. Although the tourists have nothing to worry about their safety since they are separated from the animals with natural barriers or wet moats. The zoo serves both purposes splendidly; one to show the natural wildlife in the most primitive of forms and second to ensure the safety of the people who visit the zoo.

Animals, here are not kept in a cage to prevent their normal movement but in huge enclosures and agile animals are given special treatment. The animals that are kept here are also the most threatened of species. Statistics claim the Singapore zoo has about 16 percent of its animals that are threatened. Hence the place not only acts as a modern concept of a zoo but also as a way to prevent these animals from being erased from the face of earth. To support the zoo they also have animal shows and a program which enables free entry to the zoo for a period of a year on payment of a specific amount. Within the zoo there are trams, animals, boats and ponies. There are umpteen fun and learning activities which will keep you busy throughout the day. You will never like to leave the place so easily. Such would be the fascination with amazing flora and fauna of the zoo.

Night Safari Singapore - Enjoy The Wild Life During Dark Hours!

Night Safari essentially adds a new dimension to the idea of a safari. A safari is undertaken to witness wild animals in their natural surroundings. It becomes more interesting because unlike a zoo where they are kept caged, in a wildlife reserve they are relatively free. They have a lot more space and factors which hint at their caged existence are more or less well camouflaged. Safaris are interesting because they are conducted in areas which are very well spread out and give an almost real feeling of being in the wild. Now if the element of actually witnessing animals at that time of the day is added, the experience becomes even more enriched. This excitement is provided by a night safari.

The Night Safari Singapore was the world’s first of its kind. Discussions about this project had begun way back in the 1980’s when night visits conducted by the Singapore Zoo had gained both momentum and popularity. The Night Safari Singapore officially opened its doors to the public on May 26, 1994. Mr. Goh Chok Tong,, head of the safari whose efforts triggered the realisation of this incredible dream. The Night Safari is conducted in a secondary forest which is close to the Singapore Zoo and the Upper Seleter Reservoir. The forest is spread over an area of 40 hectares and has in store apart from flora and fauna, over 1000 animals 29% of whom are considered endangered. The Night Safari Singapore is divided into eight geographical zones. The whole forest can be traversed on foot or by tram. The total length of the rood loops is 3.8 kilometers of which 2.8 kilometers is the walkway.

The safari uses ways to ensure the wellbeing of both the guests and the forest dwellers. The animals are highlighted by using a light that is a little higher in intensity than the full moon. However, this light is not strong enough to disturb the animals or raise an alarm amongst them. The animals are not caged! Instead they are separated from the visitors by natural barriers. Also cattle grids have been put in place to prevent cattle from crossing over. Wires have been installed which look like twigs so that the animals do not cross their boundaries.

The safari offers services like eating joints which include Ben and Jerry’s, Ulu Ulu Restaurant and Bongo Burgers. Guests can also enjoy the double fun of delectable food and a safari ride on the Cocktail Safari Express and the Gourmet Safari Express. Entertainment is also provided in the form of performances which include Tribal Dance, Fire Eating Act and Blowpipe Demonstration. However, the highlight of the night safari Singapore is the performance entitled ‘Creatures of the Night’. This act is actually performed by the animals of the zoo.

The mere fact that the Night Safari receives more than a million visitors every year is proof enough to hint at its resounding success. It takes the safari experience to another level.

Singapore Zoo - A Place to Have Adventure Ride!

Singapore zoo is a right place to have fun and experience the sense of sheer adventure with friends and family.

A zoo is essentially a place where animals are kept and exhibited to the general public in lieu of money. Zoos in their own way also help in conserving and preserving the lives of many species that are considered endangered. Most zoos kept their animals locked in claustrophobic cages and adopt measures like reducing the food intake of the animals so that they gradually lose their ferocity. However, the Singapore Zoo is an exception. The main objective of this zoo is to provide animals a home away from their native land and to enlighten the consciousness of the public about the need to ensure the existence of these animals. Moreover, the zoo has also lent its active support to many rescue and conservation missions.

The concept of the Singapore zoo was founded in the year 1967 and the actual zoo was opened to the public on June 23 1973. Since its inception, the zoo has been managed by the Wildlife Reserves, Singapore. The zoo is spread over an area of 28 hectares and shares its borders with the Night Safari and the Jurong Bird Park. The Singapore zoo is currently home to three hundred and 315 species of animals, 16 percent of whom are considered endangered. None of the animals are kept in captivity. Instead their dwellings are surrounded by either dry or wet moats. A few of the dangerous species are kept in glass fronted enclosures which are designed to look as natural as possible.

The Singapore zoo offers a host of activities for its visitors. For example there are tram rides, horseback rides, elephant rides, boat rides and horse carriage rides in the zoo. The volunteers in the zoo also educate the visitors about the various species. The Singapore zoo also organises interesting events like the “Breakfast with the Orang-utan’ where the visitors get the opportunity of coming up, close and personal with the animals. The zoo also has event venues namely the Forest Lodge, Pavilion-By-the-Lake and Garden Pavilion. People can book these venues for any celebration.

Other things that one can do at the zoo are feeding the animals, becoming ‘Friends of the zoo’ members or simply relax. The members of the zoo actually get a lot of benefits. For example, they get free entry into the zoo at all times of the year, free tram rides, free parking facilities, ten percent discount on participating retail outlets and a free quarterly copy of the ‘Wildlife Wonders’ magazine. In order to facilitate the visitors the zoo authorities have also set up a pick-up service that picks and drops customers from a central point.

The Singapore Zoo has also witnessed glorious events which include the breeding of the world’s first polar bear Inuka in tropical conditions and it houses the world’s largest captive colony of orang-utans.

The Singapore zoo is the apt model of an open zoo. It has breathed a fresh lease of life to animals that are kept in other places as mere objects.
